Welcome to the International Gap Junction Conference 2017 Website

On behalf of the European Gap Junction research community we are delighted to announce that the International Gap Junction Conference 2017 (IGJC 2017) in Glasgow, Scotland from the 29th of July – 2nd August 2017.

The city of Glasgow offers a thriving scientific community with three Universities focusing in biomedical research activities. It was in Glasgow, in the mid 1960’s where the Gap Junction based phenomenon of metabolic co-operation was discovered which led to an understanding of their permeability and thoughts on what they might do. So we invite you to join us to celebrate over 50 years of Gap Junction research in this exciting city.

The IGJC is aimed at cell and molecular biologists interested in connexin and pannexin biology related to protein function and regulation and effects in disease states including cardiovascular, neuronal and cancer. Traditionally delegates include; Early Career Researchers (ECRs) PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and Fellows, Principal Investigators, clinicians and representatives from biopharma companies.

We are delighted to welcome our five confirmed international keynote speakers who will present talks on key areas of connexin and pannexin biology:

Professor Christian Giaume – Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Biology (CIRB), France
• Neuroscience (Physiology)

Professor Janis Burt – University of Arizona, USA
• Vascular (Physiology)

Dr James Smyth – The Virginia Tech Carillion Research Institute, USA
• Regulation of Cx43 in cardiac ischemia and viral infection

Dr Silvia Penuela – University of Western Ontario, Canada
• Pannexins in cancer and obesity

Dr Maria D Mayan –, University of A Coruña, Spain
• Osteoarthritis, inflammation

As well as our keynote speakers, we welcome abstract submissions for presentation during the conference in both oral and poster format. Presentations accepted for ECRs will be judged and prizes for the best awarded. The deadline for submissions is Friday 28th of April 2017.

Central to the IGJC conferences and their outputs is the continuous enrichment of research activity and technologies, setting up new collaborations, exchanging ideas and training a new generation of young scientists in the field, enabling international mobility. The importance in terms of training, presentation and future activities is paramount and abstracts for presentation are particularly welcome from ECRs.

The IGJC2017 will be held in the Crowne Plaza on the banks of the River Clyde. The venue enables onsite conference accommodation and facilities, and has easy access to the heart of the city, airport and rail links. Other hotels are located within 5 minutes’ walk that offer competitive rates for varying budgets.

We wish to thank and acknowledge Glasgow City Marketing Bureau who will provide a welcome reception for all delegates in the stunning Glasgow City chambers.

Also offered in our varied social programme is a buffet dinner at the Crowne Plaza as well as the highlight – the Conference Dinner, in the heart of Glasgow’s West End followed by a traditional Scottish Ceilidh. A free afternoon on Tuesday 1st of August provides an opportunity to visit Loch Lomond for a dinner cruise and to visit one of Scotland’s most beautiful whisky distilleries.

We look forward to welcoming you to Glasgow in July 2017 for what promises to be an exceptional IGJC!
